"Both captains and crews are veteran seafarers, and each boat are fitted with appropriate safety equipment and signalling equipment," an official for the convoy commented.

The nine-person crew are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has established contact with rescue coordination centers from those nations along with their consular staff.

"Our team is collaborating completely with the relevant authorities and remain confident in the ability of the crews to safely arrive in Havana," the statement continued.

Earlier Humanitarian Mission

Previously that week, the Cuban authorities widely celebrated and warmly received a separate vessel that had delivered 14 tonnes of relief supplies to the nation.

That ship, called "Granma 2.0" after the vessel in which Fidel Castro came back to Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, brought solar panels, pharmaceuticals, formula milk, cycles and foodstuffs.

Charity groups and individuals have been at the forefront of efforts to bring critical assistance to Cuba since January, a period which saw a fuel embargo on the island nation began.

The United Nations have since warned of ""severe" shortages of supplies, with over fifty thousand surgeries postponed in Cuba because of energy rationing.
