As stated by a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the American military executed a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.

“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a deadly attack on a vessel operated by a terrorist group in international waters. Surveillance verified the vessel was traveling along a established narco-trafficking route and was involved in illicit drug transport. A total of four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were harmed.”

Context and Prior Actions

This announcement follows a day after an announcement regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers to and from Venezuela. That statement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, vowing to increase the military presence.

Just on the previous day, the Pentagon said it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, over 20 military engagements have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.

Administration Justifies Actions Amidst Pressure

The government has faced increasing pressure to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. However, officials have refused to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a successful operation, saying it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is stretching the limits of legal military action.

Although the administration has said the operation is about halting drugs destined for the US, comments from a senior aide seemed to suggest a broader geopolitical objective. In a recently published interview, the chief of staff said the president “aims to keep on destroying vessels until the Venezuelan president surrenders or concedes.”

This indicates the series of strikes may be linked to a push to oust Venezuela's sitting leadership.
