Chelsea's ambitions of qualifying automatically for the Champions League knockouts were hit hard as Atalanta overturned a deficit to triumph in Bergamo.

Each club entered this fixture with identical records in the initial stage of this season's tournament, having won, tied one, and lost to have accrued ten points.

For extended periods there was very little to choose between them in this encounter too, although Chelsea took the lead in the first half when Joao Pedro finished the captain's cross.

But The Serie A side always looked a threat going forwards, with former Premier League attacker Ademola Lookman issues for the backline.

James fired wide in the after the break but Atalanta upped the pressure and justly levelled when former West Ham United striker headed in a cross.

Alejandro Garnacho drove a powerful shot straight at the goalkeeper but they got the winner in the closing stages when the Blues defence retreated from Charles de Ketelaere, who seized the opportunity with a driven strike.

Chelsea tried to salvage a draw late on but a brilliant save by Marco Carnesecchi denied Pedro.

The outcome means Chelsea fall out of the top eight—the positions that qualify automatically for the knockouts—to eleventh with two group stage games remaining.

The Bergamo club, meanwhile, jump up to third, three points ahead of the Blues.

Chelsea Analysis - Worrying Form Continues

This was a deeply disappointing outcome for Chelsea as even a point was leaving them well placed to secure the top eight position they need to bypass the uncertainty of the play-offs.

But they lacked concentration in their defensive duties with seven minutes remaining and Atalanta capitalised completely.

The Italians are in fine fettle at the moment so this was always going to be a difficult test for the visitors, but they will be disappointed to be departing with no points after securing the early advantage.

But the bigger picture is that this continues Chelsea's concerning run of results in all competitions.

Since beating Barcelona 3-0 at the close of November they are now winless in their last four matches.

Excessive Rotations Turning Out to Be Expensive?

Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca enacted five changes for this match as he continued his strategy of moving players in and out of the starting lineup.

The changes here followed after he made the identical amount for the defeat to Leeds United and six for the draw with Bournemouth prior to the journey to Atalanta.

The coach will view rotation as essential as he attempts to handle players' workloads and challenge both at domestically and in Europe, but he stated the key nucleus of players stays the unchanged for important games.

"I think in this match [in] the starting lineup we had eight or nine players who played against Tottenham Hotspur, FC Barcelona, and the Gunners," he stated.

"If you look at the five changes that we made compared to the previous game it may be different but it is the eight or nine players who played in that match.

"The ones who took to the field tonight are the individuals playing almost all the matches."

The Blues' next Champions League game sees them welcome the Cypriot side on Wednesday, 21 January (8pm GMT).

Atalanta, on the other hand, are at home to Athletic Bilbao at the identical kick-off time.
