American flight controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and calling in sick, as they continue to work without pay amid the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official told Fox News on the weekend, as certain aircraft were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered essential workers, were instructed to continue performing their jobs uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, causing airports to stop or slow their flight operations, which has exacerbated setbacks due to climate and other issues.

More than three thousand US flights were postponed on Sunday, and Duffy stated he anticipates the situation to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the stress," Duffy remarked in an discussion on Sunday Morning Futures, noting that he had met with several controllers to hear their worries directly.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there searching, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to find an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he added.

Duffy added that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest since the closure started.

The US government shutdown entered its twenty-sixth day on the weekend, making it the second most extended halt in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would slow down the quantity of aircraft in the air if there is a deficit of security staff.

In his conversation, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was safe to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to the professionals.

"I need my controllers focused on the airspace, not on the finances at home," the official stated.

On Sunday, certain flights were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to employee deficits, causing disruption at the fifth most active airport in the country and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as additional travel extending north to the metropolis of Oakland.
