Cameron Norrie achieved the biggest win of his professional journey by rallying from a early deficit to beat world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz with a stunning comeback in the second round of the Paris Masters.

Although he had earlier defeated Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this victory signifies Norrie's initial win over a sitting world No 1.

"Massive. Incredibly significant for me," stated Norrie, who joins as the newest English competitor in the record books to beat a global number one. "Bouncing back from injury last year, I lost in the initial match of qualies here. I just tried to appreciate my game in the closing months of the year. To get a triumph like this, it's the greatest win of my professional life, my first win over the global number one and probably the most confident player in the tennis scene right now."

Norrie, seeded No 31, also halted Alcaraz's impressive sequence of nine finals in a row and 17 successive Masters 1000 successes, which was the finest stretch of results in the Spaniard's early career.

Contest Breakdown

Alcaraz appeared to be moving confidently to a win early on as he sailed through the initial stanza. Nevertheless, Norrie slowly battled back into the match by delivering with improved accuracy and pulling the Spanish opponent into extended, demanding points. His unceasing shot tolerance and dependability gradually took its toll.

During large parts of the match, Alcaraz delivered strong serves but he found it challenging to get his timing right off his groundstrokes. The young star appeared notably uneasy executing his primary weapon, which has been the best shot in the world for a large part of this season, producing 29 forehand unforced errors and a total of 54 mistakes. Opposing him, Norrie offered Alcaraz minimal unforced errors, maintaining his consistency, physicality and penetration throughout while serving efficiently and selecting opportunities to force himself into the court and strike effectively.

After dealing for an extended period due to a serious left forearm injury and challenges with his game, the tennis professional slipped as low as 91st globally this year. Following appearances in the advanced stages at Wimbledon and the French Open fourth round since then, this victory further underlines the veteran's progress as he attempts to return to the world's top twenty and beyond. The Spanish sensation, in spite of his remarkable success, is has not yet solve how to produce his best tennis on indoor courts.
