The anticipation around this year's gaming ceremony was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a completely new Divinity game.
Revealed to be Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer featuring intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.
Not the Expected Sequel
Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a third Original Sin game to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.
Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This phrasing implies that the team is likely building a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of complex computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and deep class systems—elements that recently reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its world is familiar fare, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency bestowed upon the player.
Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of specialized paths that are viable if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also wonderfully flexible, enabling players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be approached in diverse methods, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might progress the story because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a inventive way.
A New Chapter Begins
It is precisely these elements that lead fans and critics to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, players can anticipate another adventure in this legendary franchise.
