The Legendary Anime Concludes a Quarter-Century Tradition in the Coming Year

It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has run continuously for over a quarter-century and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Commencing in January, after the Egghead Island arc wraps up, the anime will take a quarterly break until April, when the Elbaph arc begins.

New Release Strategy

Going forward, One Piece will produce a pair of cours every annually for a maximum of 26 episodes. Toei explains this will help the anime to “explore further into the core of the universe — incorporating more material, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, producers end by promising “thrilling developments” during the hiatus period, which means additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut during this gap.

Previous Hiatus Benefits

The series anime had a six-month break that started in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to improve the animation quality and allow the comic to build a lead to avoid a rushed adaptation and lengthy recap episodes. The anime couldn't benefit more from this respite, and it has been able to deliver viewers with numerous fight scenes, superior graphics, and less filler than ever before.

Embracing Seasonal Format

While a few summary installments appeared during the recent run, the positive effects of this new production schedule greatly outweigh the occasional interruption in the story. This additionally allows the original work, which is currently in the middle of the Elbaph arc, to gain more ground on the anime. Per the news, this may result in a single installment of the anime covering a single manga chapter, with some instead handling one and a half chapters or more to make up for scheduling.

This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the old-school way of creation, which focused on being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why iconic series such as Naruto, and of course One Piece have numerous side stories, and the standard of the art can vary widely between one episode and the next. Nowadays, series creation is organized in seasons, with one or two at most releasing each year, enabling better quality and more faithfulness to the original work.
